Pigmentation Treatments LeedsPigmentation / Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition, where some areas or patches of skin turn darker in colour.

It is usually a harmless, though distressing condition, usually caused by an over activity of the skin pigment, melanin. This condition can affect people of all races and cause significant emotional distress.

Types of pigmentation:

Chloasma / Melasma

Chloasma and Melasma are a type of pigmentation closely related to both hormonal changes and the suns rays. These types of pigmentation often cover large patchy areas and will darken during the summer months or exposure to sunlight. Often cheeks, upper lip, the bridge of the nose and forehead are the most affected areas.

Chloasma is usually related to pregnancy and often referred to as the ‘mask of pregnancy’. It can develop on the face and other body areas.

Melasma can usually be associated with a change in contraceptive pill, IUD or hormone patch. It can also be associated with higher levels of Oestrogen at certain times during the menstrual cycle and he way the skin then reacts to sunlight. Only 10% of those affected are men.

Solar Lentigines

Age spots, sometimes called liver spots or solar lentigines, are a form of pigmentation. They usually occur as a result of damage to the skin, from the suns UVA/UVB rays. These small, dark spots are found generally on the hands and face, but any area exposed to the sun, can be affected.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmenatation (PIH)

Acne can cause post inflammatory pigmentation. This is when areas of the skin has been damaged by spots or picking of the skin. Again exposure to UVA/UVB light can exacerbate the problem.

Similarly traumatic scar or surgery scars can cause post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.

Freckles are also common and usually a hereditary skin blemish. Though freckles are often thought of as attractive, some people do seek out treatment to reduce them.

It is usual for any darkened area of pigmentation to become darker when exposed to sunlight, as melanin is part of our own bodies defence system, absorbing ultraviolet rays from the sun, in order to protect the skin from overexposure. This is actually what we refer to as "tanning."
