Electrolysis

For over 100 years, electrolysis has been recognised as a safe, reliable method of hair removal that can treat all skin and hair types, this is a popular treatment here at Face the Future Clinic.

 How does Electrolysis work?

Electrolysis is still the only technique that is classed as permanent hair removal intended to treat all hair colours and skin types. There are three different modalities offered at Face the Future Clinic including galvanic (which chemically dissolves the follicle), thermolysis (which uses localized heat), and blend (which utilizes both methods). During an electrolysis treatment a tiny sterile probe is placed within the hair follicle and a controlled amount of energy released before the hair is freed with some tweezers.

Electrolysis is a method of removing individual hairs from the face or body. It works by disrupting the hair growth cycle, using shortwave radio or a direct current to stop new hairs from growing. This procedure damages your hair follicles to prevent growth and causes existing hairs to fall out.

The hair growth cycle is explained in the consultation process as this is an important aspect of gaining a result, similar to laser hair removal the hair needs to be in the active stage of growth (anagen) to destroy the hair. Please note electrolysis is a gradual process and a course of treatments will be required to achieve the desired result. The results will vary on each individual due to many factors that can occur such as: hair type, skin type, skin reactivity/sensitivity, growth cycle, previous removal processes, hereditary factors and the effects of medication and abnormal hormone imbalances.

FAQs

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
Approximately 15-30 minutes, depending on the patient’s skin response and tolerance.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Electrolysis treats each individual hair repeatedly as gently as possible, so the hair becomes weaker. The cause of hair growth will influence the number of treatments required but a smoother hair-free appearance is our aim.
DOES THE TREATMENT HURT AND HAVE ANY DOWNTIME?
Electrolysis can be a little uncomfortable, the sensation will be experienced like a tingle, heat or a minor sting. Everyone has their own individual pain threshold which can be affected by several factors. Immediately after an electrolysis treatment it is normal for the skin to be sensitive and red in appearance. This reaction is temporary and should return to normal within 24 hours if all aftercare is followed. Post treatment, an aftercare product will be applied to calm and soothe the area protecting it from an unwanted reaction.
WHO IS THIS TREATMENT SUITABLE FOR?
Anyone with unwanted coarse hair on their face and neck however, the treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or for anyone with a pacemaker.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?
Electrolysis requires regular commitment; a full treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?
