Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

How does IPL work on Vascular lesions?
Red veins and vascular lesions are caused by overexposure to the sun, drastic changes in weather, changes in pressure, excessive alcohol consumption, environmental irritants, rosacea, hormonal changes, or simply genetics.
The light applicator is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. Where the light energy is applied to the skin this is then readily absorbed by blood vessels, heating them to a point where they are destroyed. Following treatment, the vessels quickly clear as they are reabsorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original lesion. Results can be seen sometimes instantly for smaller vessels, but for larger treatment areas a course of treatments is needed.
How does IPL work on Pigmentated lesions?
Our skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin, which is made by our melanocyte cells. Pigmented lesions such as sunspots, age spots and freckles can be triggered by excessive sun exposure, age, hereditary factors, or hormones.
Light is released in short pulses that are readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within pigmented lesions. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and causes the destruction of the melanin-rich cells.
The lesions may darken and may appear more obvious before they fade and ‘flake’ away. Sometimes an initial whitening of the area is seen which quickly fades and the pigment gradually fades over the following few weeks.
Duration of treatment – 15-40 minutes depending on the size of area been treated.
Anaesthesia required – None.
Downtime – There will be slight redness and warmth within the area treated which should subside within 24-48 hours.
Final results – Results can be instantly visible for smaller vessels, but for larger treatment areas after a course of treatments, you can expect to see a very large reduction and often a full removal of lesions and larger vessels.
Suitable for – The treatment is not suitable for tanned or darker skin tones.

DOES THE TREATMENT HURT AND HAVE ANY DOWNTIME?
Mild discomfort may be experienced, there may be slight redness which will subside within 24-48 hours. Sometimes strawberry marks/slight bruising may appear on sensitive skin for a few days post treatment.
WHO IS THIS TREATMENT SUITABLE FOR?
The treatment is not suitable for tanned skin and darker skin tones.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?
Depends on the lesion. Generally, a course of 3-6 treatments is recommended for best results, and maintenance treatments may be needed.
